Questions, answered honestly

Including the ones where the honest answer is “it depends”. We would rather explain how something is decided than promise a number we cannot stand behind.

What does a locksmith actually do?

A locksmith works on mechanical locks, keys and door hardware — repairing, replacing, installing and rekeying locks, cutting keys, and providing access to properties for authorised occupants who have been locked out.

When should I replace a lock rather than repair it?

Replacement makes sense when the hardware is worn, damaged or no longer suited to the door. If the problem is alignment, paint build-up or a misplaced strike, an adjustment is usually the better answer — we check before recommending replacement.

What is the difference between replacing and rekeying a lock?

Rekeying changes the internal configuration of the existing lock so previous keys stop working, while the hardware stays on the door. Replacing removes the hardware and fits new hardware. Rekeying is usually the lower-cost option when the existing lock is in good condition.

Can you help if I have been locked out?

Yes, for owners, tenants and authorised occupants. We will ask about the door, the lock and the property when you call, and we may ask for identification or evidence of occupancy on arrival.

Can you replace a damaged lock?

Yes. Damaged locks and entry hardware — including hardware damaged in a forced-entry attempt — are common work for us on both residential and commercial doors.

Do you install new locks on doors that have never had one?

Yes, subject to the door itself being suitable. Hollow-core doors, very narrow stiles and some aluminium sections restrict what can be fitted, so we assess the door first.

Do you work on apartments and units?

We work on the doors you are responsible for as an owner or authorised tenant. Common-property entrances and building-wide key systems are controlled by the owners corporation or building manager and need their approval.

How quickly can you attend?

That depends on where you are, what the job involves and how the day is running. We will give you a realistic indication when you call rather than a fixed promise we cannot stand behind.

How much does locksmith work cost?

It depends on the job — the hardware involved, the door, and what the work requires. Tell us what is happening on the phone and we will explain how pricing works for that type of job before anything is arranged.

Do I need to be there while the work is done?

For a lockout, yes — we need an authorised person present. For scheduled work, someone authorised needs to provide access and take the keys at handover.

Which areas do you service?

We work from 1041 Centre Rd, Oakleigh South, and cover Oakleigh South, Oakleigh, Hughesdale, Huntingdale, Clayton and Carnegie. If you are just outside that list, call and ask.

What are your opening hours?

We are open 7:00 AM – 12:00 AM. Outside those hours we cannot guarantee attendance, so please call within our opening hours.
